The head of the World Health Organization warned that the COVID-19 pandemic is evolving worldwide and that things will not return to “old normal” for some time to come. At Monday’s press briefing, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “There will be no return to the old normal in the foreseeable future.”
Tedros said that while many countries, especially in Europe and Asia, have brought outbreaks under control, too many other countries are seeing virus patterns going in the wrong direction. Tedros has also chastised political leaders for conflicting signals about outbreaks that undermine credibility, without referring to any politician by name.
Tedros called on countries to follow a holistic strategy to curb increasing caseloads in many nations, noting that about half of all new cases are now coming from the Americas. Still, Tedros said that there was a road map out of the pandemic and that it was never too late to monitor its spread even in areas of explosive transmission.
