China recorded 101 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, its highest single-day count in three months, with gyms, bars and museums closed in hotspots. Of the new cases, 98 were domestic infections, mainly in the northwest region of Xinjiang, where a growing cluster first discovered earlier this month triggered widespread testing and restrictions.
Authorities have based their attention on a cluster that appeared last week at a food processing plant in Dalian, in the north-eastern province of Liaoning. Officials said that workers treated tainted shipments of imported seafood. Fifty-two cases have been reported in the main port city in the past week, 30 of which included workers at the plant.
Following an outbreak in Beijing in June in which more than 300 people were infected, the Dalian authorities are using a similar targeted method to enforce virus control measures in various districts of the city based on their risk rates. A total of 84,060 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in China, 482 of whom remain in hospital. There were 4,634 related deaths, according to the official Count.
