Business tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested in Hong Kong under security law

An aide to Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai says Lai was detained Monday morning on suspicion of involvement with foreign powers under the city’s national security rule. “Jimmy Lai is allegedly being investigated for collusion with foreign forces,” Mark Simon posted on Twitter.

In a statement, Hong Kong police said seven people were detained on suspicion of breaching national security law but did not disclose the names of those detained. Lai, who owns influential Apple Daily tabloid, is an outspoken Hong Kong pro-democracy figure, and frequently criticizes the authoritarian rule of China.
