Google Meet Launches New Feature To Replace Background With Image

Search engine giant Google has announced that Meet users can now replace the background with an image of their choice. The company said that it has started rolling out the new feature globally. Google Meet is a video conferencing platform. Until now, users were not allowed to change their background with an image. But now they will have a choice to replace the background with their favorite picture. Google said that it is also offering a set of images that users can hand-pick. The list of pictures being offered by Google includes office spaces, landscapes, and abstract backgrounds. Also, there is an option for users to upload their own photos.

Google in a statement said that option to select their own picture is, however, not available to participants of meetings organized by Education customers. The feature initially is available to ChromeOS and the Chrome browser on Windows. Besides, users having Mac desktop devices can also enjoy the feature. The company has promised to announce the support on the Meet mobile app soon. The feature is handy as it will let users show more of their personality. With this, users can now hide their surroundings. Google Meet was launched in March 2017. The company has since then introduced multiple exciting features to make it more engaging in order to expand the user base.

The latest development comes close on the heels of Google launching an ability to filter out disruptive background noise. It also allowed users to blur the background. According to Google’s version, virtual backgrounds work directly within a browser. Users don’t require an extension or any additional software. Meanwhile, the platform has reported a sharp rise in daily meetings. In the third quarter, according to Google, the platform hosts 235 million daily meeting participants and more than 7.5 billion daily video calls. The pandemic-induced lockdown has forced the public to shift to virtual means to communicate. Google Meet lets a maximum of 100 participants join a meeting. Google Meet and similar services have transformed how the people during the pandemic. Google is already offering free video call meetings through Meet since March. The free service will remain in place till March 2021.
